They Knew…

June 19, 2018

The ACLU has filed suit over border abuse by the government from 2009 through 2014, inclusive.
That’s 6 years of abuse.
To claim that nobody in any part of the government knew about this until a couple of weeks ago strains credulity, to say the least.
Nobody in all of Congress?
Not one Governor?
Nobody in the Justice Department?
Nobody in Homeland Security?
Right…
They knew.
Clearly, nobody gave this situation a second thought until they sensed the possibility of political gain by suddenly showing outrage.
Who among the outraged complainers in the government has ever said “I APOLOGIZE FOR MISSING THIS YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR”?
Instead, with elections coming up in November, they say “I’m shocked! Shocked! To hear of this terrible situation!”
If you believe that a government that spies on everyone in the nation somehow missed this, then go apply for disability checks.
They knew.
This had to have happened with consent of people in government.
The “tell” lies in the way all these politicians now act shocked and outraged instead of showing even the slightest hint of remorse and regret for having missed it year after year.
They didn’t miss it.
They knew.
They just didn’t care until caring turned profitable.
The only other explanation for their lack of remorse is equally as damning: They just don’t care at all. Even now. As an explanation, it is equally damning… and utterly believable.
They knew.
They knew.
They knew.

I Must’ve Slept Through The Revolution…

May 20, 2018

Times Square NYC Post-Cold War

During the cold war, millions of Americans lived in fear of the USSR taking us over.

Whenever I’d meet such frightened people I would ask: “And what exactly will Russia do with America once they take us over?”
Here is what I was told:
We will have masked police with machine guns in our streets…
The government will tap all our phones and read our mail…
News will not report events, but will tell us just what government wants us to think…
Journalists who don’t fall in line will be prosecuted for telling the truth…
Our water will be poisoned…
Our votes won’t count…
An elite will control the economy…
Protest will be stifled or controlled by a handful of people…
Secret Police will infiltrate private groups…
We will live in a constant state of war overseas…
We’ll have no medical care…
People will be forced to work three jobs just to survive…
Government will ignore our complaints…
Millions of Americans will be in prison…
People will starve as those in power get richer and richer…
Government will be shrouded in secrecy for “security” reasons…
Hmmmm.
I guess Russia DID take over America after all.

HOPE and THE BIG CON

April 16, 2018

NOTE: This will likely be my longest blog post to date. It demands the space because the issue involves every aspect of our lives…

“It is not yours to finish the task, but neither are you free to set it aside.” – Rabbi Tarfon, Pirke Avot 2:21

“For us, there is only the trying. The rest is not our business.” – T.S. Eliot

—–

In 2016, the presidential election day arrived at the culmination of a staggeringly lengthy 19-month election cycle. Exposure to this lengthy, drawn-out process, played out as a TV show every day, warped the minds of many people – people who now find them selves unable to accept the election results or let go of the process. They still argue over an election that the people decided well over 500 days ago. Corporate news media encourages this obsession, as newspapers and TV shows deliver a steady stream of excuses for the democrat losing the election: Russia, Fake News, The DNC, sexism, Comey, Anthony Weiner, Bernie Sanders, Jill Stein and on and on ad nauseam. A new excuse pops up every few weeks, the latest (as of this writing) being that women were somehow bullied into voting for a particular candidate by their husbands.

This fixation with the past presents a stark deviation in the way our politics normally operate. With this essay, I will lay out, for all to see, the way in which our political system works to distract people… to con people.

Party politics has become the tool employed by the Powers That Be to divide The People and make sure that we dilute our deep power as we squabble endlessly about the next election.
By letting Party Politics take our attention away from the NOW and focusing instead on the next election, many people have permitted themselves to live in an imaginary future; a future created by advertising people and campaign professionals.
In Party Politics, nothing holds more importance than the next election. How many times have we been told, “Sure I believe in Third Party candidates. But… THIS TIME THE ELECTION IS TOO IMPORTANT!” No matter what the issue, the Party refrain is always “This is not the right time.”
With Party Politics, issues mean absolutely nothing. Democrats join Republicans to gut banking regulations and to wage war.  Only the FUTURE matters. We always hear promises for the future. By focusing our attention on the future instead of the present, we allow ourselves to get suckered into sheepishly accepting any current situation.
Well here’s a newsflash: The future never comes. The time is always NOW.

As Lewis Carrol wrote:
“The rule is, jam to-morrow and jam yesterday – but never jam to-day.”
“It must come sometimes to ‘jam to-day’,” Alice objected.
“No, it can’t,” said the Queen. “It’s jam every other day: to-day isn’t any other day, you know.”
“I don’t understand you,” said Alice. “It’s dreadfully confusing!”

And once we allow ourselves to get confused, we make ourselves like a prairie chicken to a circling hawk – ripe for the picking.

Hope and the Con Artist
Placing our focus on some future HOPE is the keystone of every con game. All con games rely on filling the scam’s “mark” with the hope of an imagined future payoff. Without this fake hope, nobody can con you. With it, anyone can – and will – con you.  Whether the payoff is 45% return on investment (Ponzi) or flipping congress (party politics) the surest sign of a con job is that it turns our heads away from now and aims us at an imagined future.

We have no power in the future. We only have power now.

So when we have our attention manipulated away from NOW, we willingly give up any power we have. When we see an unjust condition that outrages us, to shout “NEVER AGAIN” (meaning in the future) is meaningless compared to “IT STOPS NOW”. “Never again” means we accept it now.

Although it may sound counterintuitive, I believe that the worst advice we can possibly follow is KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE PRIZE. Looking unwaveringly at some future result creates a distraction that takes our focus off the NOW. To combat this, we need to deal with WHAT IS and not that which we have been fooled into imagining will come sometime in the future. You see something you want to change? Work to change it NOW. Do what you need to do NOW and do it without the lust for future results. As T.S. Eliot noted: “For us, there is only the trying. The rest is not our business.” If you fail, you fail. Big deal. But you didn’t divert your attention to some nebulous time far away that never comes. You did your work to change things here, now. Where it counts. This will take some work on our part. Earlier this month, striking teachers in Oklahoma received this startling news: “PRESIDENT OF OKLAHOMA’S LARGEST TEACHERS UNION CALLS FOR END TO STRIKE; SAYS THE FOCUS SHOULD SHIFT TO MIDTERM ELECTION” (AP, Apr. 12, 2018). Just as the teachers started getting solid results, the union shifted them away from NOW to next November and some vague future.

Spotting A Con Artist
All con artists have one thing in common: The con artist will always, relentlessly talk of the future so that you will not examine what’s happening now. This holds especially true for the political bunko artist. Example: Remember Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign theme song? “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow.”
And what did Franklin Roosevelt use as a campaign theme song? “Happy Days Are Here Again.”
FDR concentrated on NOW. Bill Clinton, who time has revealed as a con man (Remember “Slick Willie”?) clearly wanted voters to ignore what he does NOW and keep thinking about the future.
And what happened to that person in 2008 who ran on “HOPE AND CHANGE”? Remember how that turned out? It was all a whimsy, an illusion because HOPE AND CHANGE mean different things to each one of us. And that is what the con artist does; gets us each to see what we want to see instead of reality.

How We Limit Our Power
All scams, from the politics of “hope” to mega-lotteries, hinge on yanking us out of the present and into a future time that simply won’t ever come. I have known a great many people who really believed: “When I’m rich and famous then I will be happy!” It became the driving force in their lives. And some of them got their wish… only to discover that they are still the same damn person they always were – only now they have money and people know who they are. Several of these people killed themselves upon attaining their goal.

I knew a woman who wanted to be a writer. Not because she enjoyed writing. Not because she had something special to say. She wanted to be a writer because she saw a whole imagined future blossoming from her literary efforts. She had it all laid out, refined over years of dreaming: She would write a novel. Her book would get published (after a bidding war among the big publishers). The book would receive glowing, rave reviews. The press would herald the arrival of a new literary lion. The book’s movie rights would sell for a record-setting price. She would be rich and famous. And then… her family will finally respect her and envy her. She will be… somebody.
Does it come as a surprise to you that over the years this woman started several projects but never finished a single one? With such high stakes as she imagined hanging in the balance, with her imagined future-self depending upon the perceived success of her writing, she made the act of setting words to paper a task daunting beyond belief. Her “hope” limited her ability top do the one thing she claimed to want to do. She stymied herself by making the responsibility of writing into something overwhelming. She just could not do it. One of the last times she and I spoke to each other, I asked her a simple question: “Do you want to be a writer? Or do you want to be a rich and famous writer? Because those are two different things.”

The Lottery Con
Lotteries – especially the so-called “mega” lotteries – rely on people harboring outlandish hopes for their future. The state, through its unremitting lottery advertising campaigns, fill the mind with these future hopes, making them seem within reach. As noted, this focus on the future is the surest sign of a con job. And people buy the tickets knowing that the odds of winning are against them and despite the fact that stories of the ruined lives of lottery winners are legion. I knew one such person. He snagged a substantial amount of lottery money in the 1970s – it, as he hoped, it changed his whole life: Marriage. Home. Popularity. Everything he thought he wanted he got. And when the money ran out… so did his wife and his “friends”. Unable to maintain the house, he lost that too. The lottery – even though he’d won it –  just didn’t turn out the way he’d… hoped.

Hope and Fear
Along with stressing HOPE for the future, another sign of a con job is a morbid fear of the future:
“32 Million People Would Lose Coverage If Law Repealed!”
“Congress To Cut Social Security & Medicare After Passing Tax Plan!”
“Missile Test Shows North Korea Can Hit All Of U.S.A.!”
“U.S. Life Expectancy Declines For The First Time since 1993!”
“Sea Level Rise Will Flood Hundreds of Cities in Near Future!”
These actual headlines instill dread – and dread becomes the fertilizer required for the planting and growing of fake hopes. If you find yourself carrying this dread ask yourself who instilled it in you. Then ask what is in it for them.

A Lively Example
Consider the con artist in the Broadway musical “The Music Man.” In the early years of the 20th Century, “Professor” Harold Hill comes to River City, Iowa. He scouts the town for something, anything, to exploit for his own ends. He latches on to something new happening now – the town of River City has gotten its very first pool table. And he uses this pool table to turn the attention of the town away from now to the future. Hill gathers together some people and points out the pool table, asking them if they are aware of a great danger – “the caliber of disaster indicated by the presence of a pool table in your community.” He then relentlessly and with great energy paints a bleak and disastrous future for the town, all because of the pool table. Hill fills the townspeople with the fear of a total breakdown of the social structure in River City among… THE CHILDREN. Hill even invokes patriotism in the cause of protecting the town from the menacing, threatening, treacherous pool table. All to protect… the children.
Then, after letting the citizens of River City chew on this for a couple of days, letting their imaginations run wild, Hill conveniently offers them a solution to their imagined ills. A solution that paints a rosy future for the town and its precious children. A solution that will fill his pockets with money.
And there we see the Big Con’s trifecta of HOPE/FEAR/AN IMAGINED IDYLLIC FUTURE. The people of River City will… take back their town and their problems will be solved. For the con artist, the parlay of HOPE/FEAR/IDYLLIC FUTURE remains highly profitable to this very day.
Why do con artists bring up the children? Because (can you just hear it?) “The children are our hope for the future.” Which politician fails to use this scam? I always think of the Music Man and the devious Prof. Hill when I hear the endless yammering of today’s politicians who say we must elect them… for the children.

Planning
None of this is meant to knock normal planning and scheduling in life. That’s what we do to arrange an orderly and well-regulated existence. We make plans in the name of efficiency and, when dealing with others, to maintain common courtesy. This type of quotidian preparation is a far cry from basing life on imagined, desired events that we whip up into importance beyond all reality. Thinking “when I’m rich, then I’ll be happy” or “If I elect Candidate Floogleman, then the nation will be great again” is ridiculous. Normal planning is practical. The future planning of the con artist is just other fanciful. It’s the difference between being practical enough to catch a flight on time, and some chimera about a future which somebody deliberately planted in your head for his or her own purposes. The former gets YOU somewhere by your own efforts. The latter gets SOMEONE ELSE somewhere through your exploited efforts. Efforts that they planted in your mind.
Planning is about realistic goals. Saving money for a house, for instance. Not an illusion like “when I get that house then my life will be perfect.”
Politically, realism means voting for a candidate with whom you agree, instead of voting for a candidate who offers no more than fear-based slogans about the future. Beware silly promises for the future like things like “we’ll take the country back” or “no more crime in the streets”…
Don’t let promises for the future take your mind of life now. Labor organizer Joe Hill knew how easy it was to manipulate people with promises. As Hill wrote in the song THE PREACHER AND THE SLAVE:

You will eat, bye and bye,
In that glorious land above the sky;
Work and pray, live on hay,
You’ll get pie in the sky when you die.

Joe Hill knew…

Practical Action
A few years back, on a hot July afternoon, I began shivering. I felt so cold! To remedy this, I went to the window to lower the AC and discovered it was not even on. Immediately I went to the medicine chest for the thermometer and took my temperature. To my horror, the mercury registered a tad above 103º and I went straight to the hospital. I didn’t allow myself to be distracted by somebody saying, “Someday we will have better thermometers!” Or “Next year we will take back your temperature!” I took direct action and that action saved my life. Yes, I spent eight days in the hospital mostly in intensive care – but I did what was needed NOW and did not piss away my life hoping for an imaginary future when things would somehow be better.
THAT is why I am alive today to write this…

The NRA Wants You To Protest Them…

February 22, 2018

The NRA happily offers crisis management at times like this.
What the NRA desperately wants is for our attention to be focused on them – because they give politicians cover.
Focusing on the NRA is a blunder.
That is exactly what the NRA wants.
They take the heat because there is nothing we can do about them.
Forget the NRA.
We have no influence over the NRA.
They are a private organization.
Concentrating on them is a waste of energies.
We don’t have a constitutional right to oust their board or to even picket their offices.
They are the lightning rod to protect the people we CAN oust and the people we CAN picket: elected officials. We DO have the power of voting.
Go where the power is.
Every two years who do we vote for?
The whole House of Representatives and 1/3 of the Senate, that is who.
We do NOT vote for NRA leaders. They are not accountable to the People.
he more people focus on the NRA the less we pay attention to the real power: congress.

Why don’t we all vote the NRA board out of office? Oh. We can’t.

Why don’t we go to the NRA offices and picket? Oh. We can’t.

Why don’t we stop the NRA from making in political donations? Oh. We can’t.

We CAN do those those things to elected officials.

And THAT is why the NRA wants all the attention.

To distract people from where the power really is.

And remember: Politicians of ALL kinds pander to gun owners

Obama Guns (1)

Media Silly Season Again… And Again…

August 16, 2017

No, Trump did not “embolden” the people who protested the removal of a statue of Gen. Lee in Charlottesville.
These are the same people who have, for years, been howling about the Confederate flag.

They have been here, and “emboldened” for decades.
Remember how active they were when Obama was president?

Now a few of them make the news again and people run around in fear and terror all across the nation.
This is just an eruption of something that erupts whenever there is a slow news cycle.
The month of August, as many of you know, is called THE SILLY SEASON by news media because STUPID stories get blown out of proportion.
This is one of them.
No, nazis are not everywhere in our nation running things with impunity (as one person told me)
No, we are not getting invaded by nazis.
SO FAR THIS YEAR:

First everyone was afraid of RUSSIA
Then everyone was afraid of NORTH KOREA
Now everyone is afraid of NAZIS
Soon we will all be told to fear some new DISEASE like, oh… PLAGUE!

==========

News exists TO SCARE US.
It is that simple.
When we are scared, people don’t think. And that fear makes us ADDICTED to the news.

Now About Charlottesville:

There are so few of these reactionaries who fetishize the Civil War that THEY PROTEST OUT OF FRUSTRATION at having no power.
People who have power do not MARCH IN PROTEST.
That is what made THIS from CONGRESSMEMBERS so goddamn stupid:

The most powerful people in America – hold a protest…

Members of congress are among the most powerful people in America. They don’t need to have PROTESTS.
Do Hedge-Fund managers protest?
Do Insurance Company CEOs protest?
Does Big Pharma protest?
Doe the Defense Contractors protest?
Does The NY Stock Exchange protest?
Do Bankers protest?
Do News Media Executives protest?
Does Jeff Bezos protest?

Do Hospital CEOs protest?
Do Lobbyists protest?
Do the Koch Brothers march in the streets?
Does Henry Kissinger pretest?
Get the picture?
ALWAYS REMEMBER: The people who march and demonstrate WHATEVER THE CAUSE are doing so because they lack power. This is a way to try to assert power and gain more. The real power sits back and dreams of new ways to control you and me. And as we see, it works very well for them.
=====
btw: THIS is the original flag of the Confederate State of America.

There were two more flags, none of which are are the one the enraged POWERLESS people fight over.

THIS is  The Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia…

 FIGHT FEAR!

SO: When you suddenly find yourself afraid of something that didn’t scare you a week ago ask:

1) WHO PUT THIS FEAR INTO YOUR MIND?
2) WHAT’S IN IT FOR THEM?

You will keep your sanity that way…

Do not let your fears become your thoughts…

There is nothing new about the Power Structure keeping people in fear.
It is the basis of almost all advertising.
It is what MEDIA does to make sure you keep tuning in.
They LIVE to whip up hysteria.
Long ago, a book was written about this and it is back!

Family Dysfunction Persisted

March 21, 2017

As you may have heard by now, noted literary lion Chelsea Clinton has published a new book.
With a speed of hand that would shame Mickey Spillane or Edgar Wallace, the Great Weird Hope of the Clinton dynasty got a book deal (the favored corporate method for bribing people in political life) and in doing so she inadvertently shows us how untreated child-abuse travels through the generations.

The book bears the name SHE PERSISTED, a PR phrase coined to promote another book deal – that one for the already wealthy Senator Elizabeth Warren.

In the Clinton Clan, persisting has a perverse history.

By now, who doesn’t know the story of Hillary as a 4 year-old getting thrown out of the house by her abusive mother? The child had endured taunting from bullies in the park, as most children do, and so she ran home to her mother for comfort and succor. What did this FOUR YEAR-OLD CHILD get instead? As Hillary compulsively relates it over and over again, even 65 years later, her mother had the love and foresight and compassion to… throw her out of the house.
Mother Rodham blamed little Hillary for the situation, said she “gave up” and called her daughter a coward who she would not welcome in the home until THE BABY dealt with the tormentors.
Slam went the door. Does anyone, other than Hillary, really believe this callous treatment had a salubrious effect on the child?

Hillary Clinton has, for the past 65 years, related that story with pride. She says it shaped her character. Well, yes, it did. But not the way she seems to think. To Hillary Clinton, giving up means losing mother’s love and – more to the point – getting kicked out of the house. One can only imagine the depths of fear and anxiety – Separation Anxiety – this “loving mother” sparked in her infant child.

As Dr. Gabor Maté notes: “In an anecdote related by the former Secretary of State herself as an example of salutary character building, four-year-old Hillary runs into her home to escape neighbourhood bullies. ‘There is no room for cowards in this house,’ says her mother, sending the child out into the street to face her tormentors. The real message was: ‘Do not feel or show your pain. You are on your own.’ Over six decades later the candidate hides her pneumonia even from her doctor and from those closest to her. Repeatedly she has overlooked her husband’s outlandish infidelities, defending him against disgrace— no doubt suppressing her own emotional turmoil in the process.”
(Emphasis added)

Hillary Clinton has never received treatment for this early-childhood trauma – and to me, every single time she relates the story she presents a 4 year-old’s repressed cry for help. To this day, Clinton shows an irrational view of the world as a place populated by “bullies” who she, and she alone, MUST stop. She even cited this as her Raison D’être for seeking the Presidency upon receiving the democratic nomination.

And then, in her own words, spoken in her first speech after losing the election, Hillary Clinton had one strong message:

For Mrs. Clinton, 65 years after her mother terrorized her by throwing her out of the only home she knew, giving up – no matter how useless the fight may be – means the loss of love and home.
Sheer stubbornness has become a virtue in Hillary-Land. What manner of person NEVER concedes loss? Or error? Or understands the pragmatic need for a strategic concession to an opponent? I’ll tell you what manner of person: A DANGEROUS PERSON.

Untreated family abuse wends its way down through the ensuing generations. So it came as no surprise to me to see that Chelsea Clinton, an adult-child who owes everything she ever got to her parents, also carries this mania. And in the aftermath of her mother’s embarrassing election loss to a known “bully” and TV game-show host, it falls upon the adult-child to become the mother Hillary wanted but never had. Thus the topic of Chelsea’s new book fits right into mommy’s mania – as the cover makes crystal clear:

The child taking care of the needs of the mother perverts the natural flow of life. Yet this child – at age 35 – has made a career of just that. Making speeches for mother (and in a subtle way sabotaging her in the process – displaying resentment) and even talking of entering politics herself – a clear attempt by a chile to vindicate the family after repeated losses and scandals. I mean, let’s face it, after seeing the sheer hell that BOTH her parents underwent, what child would say “THAT’S the career for me!”? Would Chuck Wepner, Jr. ever consider boxing? Hell, even the NIXON off-spring knew better…

Does Chelsea really see stubbornness as a virtue? Or has she taken up the call simply to soothe her wounded mother? And for god sake WHY peddle this swill to CHILDREN? Can this adult-child not relate her feelings to grown people? I see it as bad enough when family abuse gets passed on through the generations. But to deliberately pass it on to children one does not even know becomes a form of mass abuse. All to justify a mother who has long had the time and ample financial resources to GET THERAPY and change the warped view of the world she brags about carrying… ONE speech to Wall Street would have paid for Hillary’s therapy and then some.

Upon seeing the announcement of this book, I got hit with a wave of sadness. I hoped that Chelsea’s children don’t face similar horrendous abuse. Considering that the abuse has gotten mythologized as “character building,” will Chelsea take the chance to throw her own children out of the house at age 4? Will she do as her grandmother did, and make a mother’s love conditional

If Chelsea sees the delusion of stubbornness as a virtue, and sees it as good enough to spread to countless unknown children through her book – I wonder how she sees her own children? And their children after her? Where does it end. When she has a son, will she name him SUE?

Well, that comprises the problem which the Clintons must one day face. OUR problem, I see as more alarming: We as a nation must learn to stop electing to positions of power those damaged people who still suffer under the weight of untreated childhood abuse. But because of the alarming rate of abuse in America, such wounded and deluded people resonate with the bulk of our neighbors. Possibly even you… or me.

Seeing Danger Everywhere

March 9, 2017
—–
Last year former CIA head Leon Panetta found himself drowned out at the Democratic convention with shouts of NO MORE WAR:

Just a few days ago, the 78 year-old Panetta told CBS news that Trump’s tweeting weakens the presidency and  (GASP!) prevents him from starting wars. This… is a disappointment to him?

“I think, I think that is raising the most serious danger with regards to the ability of this president to relate to a very dangerous world,” Panetta said.

Dangerous world…

One of the key components of the far right-wing mindset is the firm belief that we live in a dangerous world which must be subdued and conquered through strength.

Rudy Giuliani is a case in point.
I remember seeing Giuliani give a speech to the GOP convention back when he was considered relevant. Like many conservatives he sees threats everywhere. After that, he spoke about this almost every time he delivered a speech. He insists that the world is a dangerous place, filled with people who want to kill us.

How does this happen to a person?

As with many fear-based people, Giuliani suffered early-childhood abuse at the hands of his parents and he now labels that very abuse as the best thing that ever happened to him.
Giuliani – even today at age 72 – tells the story of being a 3 year-old in Brooklyn where the other kids worshiped, as children are often wont to do, the Brooklyn Dodgers, their local baseball team.
At that time, Giuliani’s father – for reasons unknown, other than the fact that his record shows him to be a sadistic thug (of the type Giuliani later make a career out of prosecuting) – would dress little Rudy in a NY Yankees uniform and send him out of the house. For wearing the uniform of the Bronx team in Brooklyn, Rudy would get beaten up. Every day. And his old man did nothing to help. In fact, he just kept sending Rudy out in that uniform – which all the other kids hated.
Sounds pretty grim, right?
But Giuliani says that what his father did helped build character. Well, yeah, a WARPED character.
From the NY Times in 1989:
When Mr. Giuliani was about 3 years old, his father, a dedicated Yankees fan, bought his son a Yankees uniform and cap. Mr. Giuliani’s mother dressed him in the uniform and sent him out to play in Flatbush. He was pounced on by a group of boys almost immediately. They were Dodger fans.
”They took the hat and threw it in the mud,” Mr. Giuliani recalled. ”They threw me in the mud, too, and probably whacked me around a little bit. I ran upstairs and either my mother or father said, ‘Well, now you’re going to be a Yankee fan.’
”So,” he continued, ”I kept wearing that Yankee uniform, and I kept getting thrown in the mud.”
He is still a Yankee fan.
Note the repression: the kids PROBABLY whacked him around. He doesn’t know? He cannot tell if his mother or father gave him dubious advice that he still obeys, yet he QUOTES that advice?
He was THREE YEARS OLD at the time and was still relating this tale of woe at age 45.
At over 70 he continues.
These are signs that a person suffered greatly and still carries it about in a repressed/mythologized way. Is the brutality Rudy suffered at the hands of the kids at a truly formative age, and his family’s indifference to his suffering, the reason for his seeing the world as a dangerous place? For him, at the time it was dangerous! Whatever the cause – and this is the alarming part – Giuliani STILL insists on wearing a Yankee uniform whenever he can. He sends out SIGNED pictures of himself this way. As an old man, Giuliani is still reacting to a situation that happened in 1947…
Compare Giuliani’s story with the story of Hillary Clinton’s mother having thrown her out of the house at age 4 – and her need to repeat the tale over and over and over while insisting that it was an act of motherly love and character building. Hillary’s mother did this because Hillary was abused by bullies and she came home crying. Clearly what the mother did – rejecting a child in pain – was worse than anything the other kids did. A 4 year-old RELIES on the parent. But her mother punished her in a most horrible way that without doubt set off a crisis of separation anxiety. And this too NEVER left Mrs. Clinton. Even as an elder, she still needs to please her dead mother:
People with untreated/unresolved childhood trauma are not “crazy” nor are they necessarily “bad” people. They are damaged people. These people suffer deeply yet they will never acknowledge it. After 60 years of living like this, it becomes not a part of who they are but who they are in their entirety. And putting such people in positions of power is dangerous. Lethal. Ask the surviving citizens of Libya and Honduras – where Hillary “stood up to bullies” – how they liked having her help…
Clearly, there exists in such damaged people a stubbornness that makes them adhere to the self-created mythology of their brutal childhood – while projecting it onto the world. They still say, to dead parents, It’s NOT my fault, Mommy/Daddy! The WORLD is DANGEROUS! Don’t blame ME!
In my work as a Tarot Consultant I regularly hear from people who have undergone the most horrible things that life can throw at a person. Yet they sought out help and coped with the problems in a productive way. They all have in common a willingness – a desire! – to face the issue and resolve it so they may not be dominated by dead fears.
None of us grew up unscathed. But many of us got help in dealing with these things rather than allow them to fester to the point where we compulsively live our lives in reaction to a situation that no longer exists.
On a personal note: For years I have told people that I had a childhood only Charles Dickens could have written. I can never undo it – but I don’t have to mythologize it. The physical torture I endured and the mental abuse – these are part of who I am and always will be, but they do not RULE or DEFINE who I am.
Because I got help.
The last thing I can imagine about myself is that at age 70+ I will be standing in front of people I don’t know, repeating day after day stories of early childhood abuse and praising my parents for inflicting this damage on me.
Looking at Hillary Clinton and Giuliani, I have to wonder what happened to Panetta so many, many years ago that now, at age 78, he can face a crowd of THOUSANDS saying to him NO MORE WARS and have it mean absolutely nothing to him. He SMILED at this! I would certainly question myself if I underwent that experience. Judging from his subsequent comments, Panetta only saw that as confirmation that the world is dangerous – meaning, the world is against him personally.
Do we really want such people in charge of our society?
Really?

1955’s TRIAL… Nothing New Under The Sun

February 18, 2017

This post concerns a rarely seen film. A powerful film; which may explain why it rarely got shown since its release in 1955. New to home video, it dealt with a topical subject when made. And, sadly, the raw ugly truth it conveys about American life remains topical over 60 years later.

As noted thousands of years ago “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” Specific issues may change, but society always remains the same, explosive powder keg awaiting a match, often applied by the very people who trick us into believing they want to help us or lead us. Left and Right will mean nothing if the powder keg blows up. And someone always profits from the blast.

In the film TRIAL, each extreme gets revealed as equally deadly when a town becomes a pressure cooker of conflict over a seeming murder.

The story seems deceptively simple: A sheltered law professor with no experience beyond a classroom gets caught up in the real world – and learns that he knows almost nothing about the real practice of law.  If you think America today with its political opportunists who say one thing but do another, who spread racism for profit in new – this film from 1955 (though set in 1947) will show you that nothing has changed. Including those “tolerant liberals” who, inside, harbor just as much prejudice as any klansman.

All sorts of people get involved in a racially charged murder case for all manner of personal profit. We gradually discover that each character has a personal axe to grind: Holding on to a law professor job. Running for governor. Keeping real estate values high. Remaining police chief. Proving himself above racism. And, most deadly, changing society at any cost. As the story unfolds, each character willingly – eagerly! – turns up the heat under the pressure cooker to further his own needs.

This tension creates a crackling, powerful film about extremists of all sorts. Some elements in the film will seem quaint now, but substitute modern groups like the DNC – who want their way regardless of the consequences – and it still works. What kind of a group will gladly cause horrific damage just so they can proclaim “WE TOLD YOU SO” in order to raise money for themselves?
See what I mean? Still works today.

Opportunists willing to destroy everything and anyone to promote themselves have always operated freely among us. Sometimes they win. Sometimes they get opposed successfully. But first we must know them when we encounter them; something not always so easy to see.  When our passions get roused, when we believe that we can clearly tell the “good” people from the “bad,” then we make ourselves ripe for the picking. We blindly give those with ulterior motives the power to manipulate us.

As the lead character says early on: “I learned a long time ago that when someone says ‘decide right now’ that that’s the time to take your time.” He knows this. Does he do it?

Fundamentally, this film presents a cautionary tale about the difference between knowing the right thing and doing the right thing. Passion and certainty cloud the mind. Whether in the courtroom or the bedroom. This film could easily get set in today’s America, using any “populist” movement in place of that shown from the 1940s. As one character slyly notes, “never trust anyone”. Especially those you consider leaders. You may not really know what goals they have dedicated themselves to.

Little wonder TRIAL never made it to home video till 2014. It says things which even today most people just refuse to hear.

Over the years, Mark Robson proved himself a serious film director and the novelist/screenwriter Don Mankiewicz, son of Herman, had solid credentials as well. Mankiewicz lived a long life, till 2015, so he must have seen the situations in his story played out over and over and over.

TRAIL deceives. This film looks like one thing (another courtroom drama, though an excellent, realistic one) yet, like the events depicted, TRIAL really shows another thing. Glenn Ford performs at his best here as the Ivory Tower lawyer who gets, reluctantly, a taste of the real world. Katy Jurado again plays her patented “suffering Mexican mother,” Rafael Campos appears as the young man who might have… or perhaps not…
Of particular note to me: The cinematography of Robert Surtees. It heightens the proceedings with some genuine surprises. Juano Hernandez as the judge performs up to his usual high standards and excels as a man who faces heat from all sides. Arthur Kennedy snared an Oscar® nomination for playing the smartest man in the room. Perhaps too damn smart…

I consider TRIAL worth seeing to understand much of today’s events, for it presents a warning against extremism when it comes cloaked in virtue. Don’t all extremists believe they alone know the “truth”?

Always question. Always look deeper. Never call anything true for no other reason than it comforts you or reinforces your beliefs.

Do so, and you likely don’t know any more than the people who pull the strings on the puppets want you to know. Consider instead the very real possibility that you, yourself, represent the main puppet.

Keep your eye on the prize and you’ll always lose sight of everything else.

He Sure Has A Lot To Learn About Being President…

February 8, 2017

President Trump could have avoided all the lawsuits and all that protesting if, instead of banning travel from those 7 countries, he dropped 27,000 bombs on them. Per year.
THAT, nobody cares about… It worked wonders for the other guy.
