If I had to isolate one personality characteristic most common in Social Media, it has to be FEAR.
Fear is not evident in everyone (especially not in those on my friend list!) but it sure is out there and running wild. Fear of damn near everything is bad enough – but mostly in chats I have observed a strange fear of being WRONG about something. For example, one person on Facebook just BLOCKED me after sending a snotty message because I DARED to mention that contrary to her assertion, New York’s Lincoln Center is not located on 68th Street. This demonstrable fact upset her. Why? I have no idea, but her reaction is not atypical.
I recently listed FBI stats in a NY Times comment section (the lowest form of Social Media) showing that terrorism in the USA is mostly non-Muslim. “Uh, NO!” came one brilliant reply from a master of forensics.
I have repeatedly asked Hillary supporters to give me one reason SHE should get any votes. If a specific reason is ever cited, a rare happening, it always turns out to be wrong – which I gracefully explain using a new invention called FACTS. Invariably, these facts are dismissed with a wave of the phrase “you are a hater!” and then I am usually compared to a lower bodily orifice. Why? Because a cherished belief turned out to be wrong. To Hillary supporters, merely correcting their mistakes about her record is like asking a jesus-christer if Mary really was a virgin.
BEING WRONG IS NOT A SHAMEFUL THING
Acknowledging an error, and acknowledging ignorance, is the first ESSENTIAL step in the process of LEARNING. Yet time and again we see people who have false beliefs which they cling to in spite of facts. This is evidence of fear, and when fear takes hold, facts mean nothing.
We are ALL ignorant concerning many things. How could it be otherwise?
Does anyone seriously think they know everything? Yet the words “I do not know” seem to be the most difficult things for many people to string together. Rather than say “I do not know”, they will fabricate “facts.” Then, they cling to the fabrication with religious zeal. They simply cannot tolerate being wrong. This is where the lie that 99% of terrorists are Muslim comes from. Prove this is wrong, which is easy, and all hell breaks loose.
Why is this? I don’t know many more things than things I do know. How could it be otherwise? Yet people go to war over the supposed SHAME of being wrong about something. They not only refuse to acknowledge an error, they double down. They act just like Bush/Cheney/Powell on the subject of WMD (and STILL people insist that there WERE WMD even though “W” once slipped up and admitted otherwise.)
Think of Donald Drumpf clinging to his demonstrably erroneous belief that thousands upon thousands of Muslims over in Jersey City cheered on 9/11/01. Or that Paris is a city in Germany.
This is part of Drumpf’s appeal to a generally disturbed public. He is simply incapable of acknowledging a mistake. And he is cheered for this ignorant intransigence as though it were an asset. He also must be keenly aware that if he does say he was wrong he will lose his most ardent – and ignorant – supporters. They would turn on him faster than Drumpf can bankrupt a casino.
Putting fear-based people in positions of authority will always lead to death and destruction on a global scale. Until America rids itself of fear, people exactly like “W,” who live in constant fear (as do most dry drunks), will hold a deep appeal to voters. Look at the millions of deaths and the widespread destruction “W” caused in his panic over supposed “evil doers” he saw everywhere.
This is not Bush’s fault, nor is it Drumpf’s fault. Sick people will always elect other sick people. It is inevitable. And the sickest among us will never seek help, for in our culture “YOU SHOULD HAVE YOUR HEAD EXAMINED” is a deep, deep insult. When you break a leg, is: “YOU SHOULD GET THAT X-RAYED” an insult? No, nor should it be.
Sick people whose addiction is fear will never let go of that fear. They need it. They are accustomed to it. It is in the warp and woof of their personal fabric, planted there ages ago and nurtured with all the loving care an addict always give to their drug of choice.
This fear is nothing new. 1919 was a year of monumental fear in America – and that is when this book was written. It sure resonates today.
I wrote an introduction to this new edition, putting it all in its historical context. If we want and desire true happiness and freedom, we need to beak the cycle of fear. Fear-based people will only spread fear in the Home of the Brave.
Why is it that the American people bounce from one dire fear to another with the sheer velocity of a steel marble in a pinball machine? Our neighbors (not you and me, right?) spend their lives encased in an amniotic sack of terror. Be it commies, or drug-crazed hippies, or psycho-veterans home from ‘Nam, or China, or Iraq or Ebola or you name it – we always seem to be facing “the greatest threat ever” to our existence.
Remember the hysteria over Ebola Fever? Two people contracted that in America last summer. Two. People feared elevators, subways, theaters, SNEEZES… and today people STILL fear Ebola Fever. When that peaked… right on cue, came ISIS: “Americans believe that Isis poses the most serious threat to the United States in the next decade, according to a poll,” says the story. Last year almost nobody in the country even heard of ISIS. President Obama publicly dismissed them as the “Junior Varsity” of threats. But then along came the military industrial complex’s fear machine and now ISIS has replaced Ebola Fever as the greatest threat EVER to Americans. Even though ISIS has no interest in coming here, has no air force to get it here, and is getting its ass kicked around the middle east, America stands poised to go to war against them. Why? Because people are afraid. Just like the commies scared their parents and grandparents, Americans now fear, dread, and cower at the thought of ISIS. Home of he Brave? Yeah, right. This is the pattern. Something you never heard of before suddenly pops up as our greatest threat. And, well, does “Hook, Line, and Sinker” ring a bell? Behold the hysteria:
Combining two sets of fear tactics, Congressman Michael McCaul, chair of the Homeland Security Committee, said that ISIS is the “greatest national security threat since 9/11.”
Mike Rogers, chair of the Intelligence Committee, said ISIS, “has the capability to tap people with Western passports to send them back to Europe and the United States for terrorist activity…” adding “This is as dangerous as it gets.”
Senator Lindsey Graham said about the president, “I’m disappointed in the commander in chief for not addressing the threat that ISIL presents to the United States.” Of course to Graham everything that casts a shadow on his closet door is a threat. But you see how it works? Today, FEAR is the life-blood of American politics. It is how people are controlled.
NEXT BIG THREAT
Eventually all the manufactured fears fade away, as evanescent as the bubbles in a bottle of cheap domestic champagne. Then out of nowhere, seemingly without warning, comes the Next Big Threat – and off we go again! So, what is poised to be the next threat? By next summer the next threat, I predict, will meld several old threats: Communism. Cuba. AIDS. Just as America stands ready to end the senseless and anachronistic embargo inflicted upon the teeny island of Cuba, we get THE CUBAN AIDS SUPERBUG!
“Aggressive form of HIV uncovered in Cuba: HIV to AIDS in three years”
That’s what the article screams. And it is picking up steam, sure to become the newest, latest, biggest single-biggest threat to America we have ever seen. And it will happen just in time to scare people away from that Cuban vacation so long denied the denizens of The Land of The Free. Just watch. It will be the terror of the Summer of 2015. And then it will morph into an actual war-threat: Commies from Cuba paid by ISIS will sneak across he borders on tippy-toes as they start a campaign of bedding down our wholesome American virgins. And what will Lindsey Graham say: “WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE.” Right on cue.
SO WHAT SHOULD WE FEAR?
Fear seems to be a deep-seated need in humans. Our senses developed to notice sudden moves that could be deadly predators. Like saber-toothed tigers. So we once needed these fears to stay alive. We spend fortunes on scary movies and scary rides in “amusement” parks. Those who whip up fake fears know this and use it to control us. When we fear we don’t think. We get into fight/flight. And i goes without saying that the last thing most politicians want is a public that thinks. So they manufacture fears.
So to feed the need for fear, and to “vaccinate” you against the parade of faux fears which will certainly continue unabated, I herewith give you a real fear, free of charge. If you crave something to be afraid of, try this out for size: As I have watched the fears come and go over the decades, I have often wondered why people fail to recognize the real threats. Why do they fear something like Ebola, which has killed one person here (and he contracted it elsewhere) or the Soviet Union – yet they do not fear the biggest killer in all human history. In a nutshell: WHY DON’T AMERICANS FEAR DRIVING?
The latest numbers show that traffic “accidents” kill 92 Americans PER DAY. We have a staggering 11,000,000 traffic accidents per year. We’re talking 32,000 accidents PER DAY. Yet who thinks twice about pulling into traffic? Last year people were terrified to get into an elevator, lest they contract Ebola Fever – which was an impossibility. Remember, only two people contracted the disease in America, and both were healthcare workers who tended people who had the illness. Both survived. Yet people panicked and – based on nothing but fear – decided that the risk of getting Ebola Fever in a commuter train was so terrifying that they DROVE THEIR CARS INSTEAD, which is demonstrably a HUGE risk to life and limb. Hell, damn near everyone knows someone who was killed or injured by a car. I have known several – including a tailor who was crushed when a car crashed through the wall of the building in which she sat sewing. So why don’t people fear the REAL threat, traffic? Because to fear traffic would impoverish too many rich people. So we are sold cars as a) giving us freedom and b) giving us love. Look at the way cars are advertised. Cars crush people, operating them enrages people, they pollute the air, the fuel they burn causes international wars, and people go into massive debt just to own one when most people do not even need one. Millions of people each day clog the roads with cars schlepping one person from here to there. And nearly 100 a day, every day, will die because of them. But we don’t fear them. Does this make sense?
Of course not! Yet the fact remains that irrational fears come and go, driven by a media that exists and thrives on selling these fears. But we never get drilled in fearing cars. Car sales run the economy. Their ads contribute billions to the corporate media. Over $665 per car is spent on advertising. Through ads, car driving gives the illusion of freedom even though THEY ARE THE BIGGEST DAILY THREAT WE FACE. And we face this threat without a second thought. Think about that, and ask yourself why we fear something that is no threat to us, like Ebola or ISIS or Iran, yet we give no thought to the biggest threat we face every single day. Who is doing this to you and why do they do it?
FREE YOURSELF FROM FEAR
Whipping up fear to manipulate people, and milk them for all they are worth, is nothing new. It was the basis of the “lighthearted” show The Music Man. I often point out one show stopping number from that show to illustrate all we need to know about politics today. Take 4 minutes to see how it works:
LISTEN: You do not need to live in a state of fear, and certainly not a series of never-ending fears instilled in you by people who will profit from that fear, as we saw in that movie clip. Learn how to break the shackles of fear. Almost 100 years ago, in 1919 during the time of the Bolshevik Panic that swept America, a book appeared. UNMASKING FEAR details the grip in which fear holds us and what we can do about it. History shows us that FEAR is still a prime method of control. If you suddenly fear something that you never heard of, ask yourself why? How did you come to fear this? Who told you to? What is in it for them? And read this book. I wrote the new introduction which puts it into historical context. As we go from fear to fear every few months, who can people be expected to relax and dwell on the historical precedents from 100 years ago? If you have had enough… If you don’t want to be victimized by an unending stream of irrational fears, this is the book for you. One warning: Don’t let anyone scare you away from this book. They try. Don’t let them succeed. Click the image to get a copy of this small, yet liberating volume.
I write these words not as a priest, nor as an American. I write this as a Human Being.
When people torture people or animals, they have committed a crime. When Governments torture prisoners, they have committed a human rights crime. When governments torture prisoners of war, they have committed a war crime.
And yet right now people ardently support the torturing of POWs – one of the most heinous crimes on the books – and they have even suggested that doing so is good, right and proper. Media people, such as the simplistically stupid Joe Scarborough; the senile closest-case Chris (Look at W’s bulge!) Matthews, the entire platoon of peroxided harpies on FOX “news” all publicly have argued that “if” torture works, it is something we must do. In fact, say these twisted people, it is an obligation. “IF” it works.
And this is how they have deftly changed the debate from acknowledging that torture is one of the worst crime on the books, to a mere debate of its efficacy. All the while they scream that the Senate report on torture should – MUST! – remain secret. Torture is good but… we don’t want people to know we did it? Sounds like way down deep, they know the truth. They know. But they, like the sociopath Cheney and his puppet “W,” believe that the ends justify the means. They have said so over and over again. You know who espoused precisely that belief? A fellow named Leon Trotsky. Is he the model of the New America? If so, then Welcome to the New USA… It is now the USSR.
Well let us discuss this issue that these criminals and their ardent defenders raise. Does torture work? No. History clearly shows that torture is designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to get a false confession out of someone. In fact, the records now reveal that this is how the Cheney/Bush people got their highly coveted “information” about WMD. They got it by torturing people until somebody who could not take the agony said just what the torturers wanted to hear. And the world is still paying for it today.
Need more proof? Ask Senator John McCain, no “Dove” by any stretch of the imagination. We all know that McCain was tortured by those horrible North Vietnamese. And we know they are horrible because… they torture people. As “commies” they even went so far as believe that… the ends justify the means. Well, today Ho Chi Minh could host a show on FOX or any of the TV networks that have the gall to even hint that torture is a legitimate interrogation tool.
Yes, we all know that McCain was tortured. But what most people do not know is that under torture, McCain cracked. He broke. He gave in. John McCain signed false confessions, admitting to crimes and he even allowed himself to be filmed making false admissions. To end the agonizing torture, John McCain did what people invariably do: he lied through his teeth to stop the pain. McCain has freely admitted this. And there is no shame in what he did. Could you stand up to torture, day in and day out? McCain did exactly what thousands of people did when the Catholic Church – followers of the “Prince of Peace” – tortured them under the tutelage of the Spanish Inquisition. Under torture, people confessed to having made bargains with a totally fictitious entity called “Satan.”
How about Salem, Massachusetts? There too, under a delightful system called “crushing,” women falsely confessed that they were witches. False confessions came spewing forth just as they did from John McCain when he was tortured beyond all endurance.
This month, the United States Senate released its report on torture, and McCain’s conservative pals fought tooth and nail to cover up the illuminating document, which reveals the very things they claim America had every right to do. Have you ever heard of a politician, proud of his actions, hiding the light of his or her proud accomplishments under a basket? In this case they did. “What we did was right,” they say. “But we cannot let people KNOW about it or… they will think that America does these things.” Classic insane “logic.”
In response to this outbreak of wailing and gnashing of teeth, John McCain took to the senate floor and spoke in favor of releasing the torture report, and he also spoke about torture in general. I predict that McCain’s speech, his Stain On Our National Honor speech, will go down in history along side the Gettysburg Address and FDR’s Four Freedoms speech as one of the great orations in American History. If you have not heard this remarkable presentation, please take 12 minutes to do so now. McCain’s moving words, spoken from the heart and soul, will be remembered long after we are gone.
So we know that torture does not produce any workable results. In fact, we know that people died because of torture. Under the unimaginable pain and terrors of what the CIA calls “Enhanced Interrogation Techniques,” a craven and spineless euphemism if ever there was one, people popped out with any names they could think of to gain even momentary surcease from the agony inflicted upon them. Documentation shows that the CIA’s torture victims turned in innocent neighbors and acquaintances; just as people hundreds of years earlier claimed that they had seen neighbors with witches or the mythical “Satan.”
For some reason, in his festive season, all of this rang a very familiar bell with me. After a few moments of reflection, it hit me. This time of year, Christmas Time, millions of people enjoy a movie that actually shows the fallacy of torture as an effective tool. We all watch this film as a Holiday Ritual to celebrate the birth of a non-violent rabbi born two millennia ago. The movie is… “A Christmas Story,” and the torture victim who breaks and then names an innocent friend as the offender is none other than cute little Ralphie Parker.
We all remember the scene: At one point, innocently and out of sheer frustration, 9 year-old Ralphie says the word to end all words: he says “fuck” – only the filmmakers substitute the word “fudge,” just as the CIA says E.I.T. in place of “torture.” Hearing this attack on their values, Ralphie’s parents react with horror and shame and outrage! As the narration by grown Ralph relates it to the viewer, “I said THE word, the big one, the queen-mother of dirty words, the “F-dash-dash-dash” word!” Ralphie immediately fears the repercussions, and even dreads a form of waterboarding! “It was all over,” grown Ralphie recalls in the narration. “I was dead. What would it be? The guillotine? Hanging? The chair? The rack? The Chinese water torture? Hmmph. Mere child’s play compared to what surely awaited me.”
In high dudgeon, Ralphie’s parents demand to know where he heard that vile word. Under interrogation, Ralphie finds himself in a bind. He has heard the word every day of his life from his father (who hypocritically claims one set of values while living another set). But Ralphie cannot tell his parents this without revealing their two-facedness. In this bind, Ralphie experiences pure separation anxiety, for without his parents a small child will die. But Ralphie cannot or will not say a bad word about his dad. This early childhood anxiety sometimes never leaves a person and it forms the root of all knee-jerk, unthinking, no exceptions patriotism.
And so, to get to the truth… Ralphie’s parents apply torture. Until he tells his parents what they want to hear, the little child is forced to sit in isolation with a bar of soap in his mouth. And not just any soap, mind you! The filmmakers go out of their way to impress upon the viewer that this is Lifebuoy Soap. We may not recall it now, but back in the 1940s, Lifebuoy was the very first deodorant soap on the market, and it was, at the time, made with Carbolic Acid. In order to force the truth out of him, Ralphie is poisoned by his parents. And they do it deliberately, for out of all the soaps available to them, they select this one – and Ralphie knows what awaits him for, reviewing the selection, he thinks, “Lifebuoy, on the other hand… YECCHH!” Clearly they had tried other soaps in the past and found this one works to their satisfaction.
The symptoms of Carbolic Acid poisoning are horrific. They include, but are not limited to: severe abdominal pain, bloody stools, diarrhea, nausea and bloody vomiting, low blood pressure, rapid heart rate, deep rapid breathing, wheezing.
Under this torture, Ralphie does as all torture victims do; as John McCain did and as the 17th-century nuns at Louden did: Ralphie lies. Under pressure, Ralphie names an innocent friend as the culprit just so the torture will stop. Ralphie’s “Father Grandier” turns out to be his friend Schwartz who promptly gets an undeserved beating so harsh and so revolting that even Ralphie’s mother cannot stand to hear it. As Schwartz’s screams mount in intensity, Mom simply hangs up the phone and turns away – as the conservatives of today are doing when they attempt to hide American torture.
And now, I cannot see Christmas Story without thinking of Schwartz and McCain and victims of torture through the ages. The victims and the sick, demented people who supported torture hover over this film.
History is unequivocal and explicit on these points: Torture is a crime. Torture is useless. Torture is Un-American. Torture is even cited by the bloodthirsty neocons as one of the crimes of the dreaded Sadaam Hussein, and they cited it often as a justification for their war of choice on the people of Iraq.
Out of fear and insane patriotism, America hypocritically did it exactly what we convicted WW2 soldiers for doing: waterboarding. We tried, convicted and hung enemy military for waterboarding Americans. The torturers died for what they did. Yet here, in the New America, now, today, people go on TV to say, as the feculent Dick Cheney did, “I’d do it again in a minute.” The words of an earlier CIA criminal, Howard Hunt, referring to Richard Nixon, genuinely apply to Cheney: “He’s the darkness… reaching out for the darkness.”
The whole world agrees that torture is a crime. The world agrees that torture provides no useful information. The world agrees that torturers should be put to an ignominious death. But Cheney would do it in a minute. Chris Mathews defends it. People who denounce it are treated like criminals. The only person in jail over this is the whistle-blower who revealed it all.
So thanks to Cheney and his criminal cohorts for turning the USA into the very people we were trained to hate: Sadaam Hussein and Leon Trotsky.
And thanks for ruining one of the sweetest and funniest movies to come down the pike in years.
All that was needed for the government to violate international law was… FEAR. Fear is the tyrant’s greatest tool. When people are scared they cede all power in their cowardice. And what is the media of today for if not to scare you? Just turn to the fake Ebola horror. Some Americans are STILL scared that they will die of this disease. Just as I hear from people who still fear the now gone USSR. Or they fear Cuba. Just this evening, I saw a middle-aged person saying on social media that America is moving “one step closer to communism.” Communism! It still scares many people. This is a demonstrably irrational fear that some people, warped by constant childhood brainwashing, now willingly submit themselves to.
In the early 20th Century, a book appeared which delved into the issue. That book is UNMASKING FEAR.
If anything, in the nearly 100 years since this book appeared, it has gotten worse. In the days before the invention of corporate controlled mass communications media, who could have envisioned people going into hysteria over a radio broadcast dramatizing a Martian invasion? When Orson Welles turned out the radio show The War of the Worlds in 1938, you can bet your bottom dollar that the power structure took notice. Here, at last, was the Shepherd’s Crook needed to keep people in line: Mass media!
That classic 1919 book is now reissued with new introductions (by me!) which put this important work in historical context. There is no reason to live your life in fear! Beware of those who would mislead you about this book! Fear is all they have and they will use fear to stop YOU from reading this liberating volume. The new introduction puts the book in its historical context and shows why it is still relevant today. CLICK HERE or on the image to see this book at Amazon.com
So now high ranking members of the American government have gone into weeping hysterics over a group called ISIS.
This is a group of radicals about half the size of the NY Police Department who are waging many wars on many fronts and getting beaten badly by the Kurds. They have almost zero chance of success. But…
This splinter group committed some atrocities on video and now we must launch a war against them.
What ISIS needs to succeed is a stream of new recruits. And having the USA as their enemy will be the greatest recruiting tool since UNCLE SAM WANTS YOU!
The videos of some beheadings sent American policy makers into fear and anger. And that is NOT the time to make a decision. But they did, so now…
We get all the usual blather about how ISIS is the greatest threat EVER to the United States, just like the Soviets were and the “Red” Chinese were and the Viet Cong were, you get the drill. The Home of the Brave is always scared shitless about some group or other.
But who is to blame NOW? At whose feet do we lay the blame for the ISIS wars? That’s easy: George W. Bush is to blame. He destabilized the area with a needless war because God told him to do it… Great… a religious nut launches a war and Americans blame other religious nuts for it.
Bush’s divine war against Iraq all but gave the world a written guarantee that Shia, Sunni and Kurds would butt heads on the battlefield, but that was not enough for Bush. Like the overgrown mama’s boy that he is, Bush had to appear macho to the world so… THE IDIOT ACTUALLY – LITERALLY! – ASKED FOR THIS! Does nobody in the rah-rah corporate media remember Bush’s taunting challenge to the various groups in Iraq?:
“There are some who, uh, feel like that, you know, the conditions are such that they can attack us there. My answer is: bring ’em on. We got the force necessary to deal with the security situation.” July 2, 2013
“BRING ‘EM ON”
Remember that? “BRING ‘EM ON”…
The idiot actually said it. He TOLD them to do it. In case you missed it, take a look above at the video.
So now they are bringing it on and nobody is mentioning that THE RELIGIOUS IDIOT, THE DRY DRUNK IN THE WHITE HOUSE, THE MAMA’S BOY NAMED GEORGE W. BUSH TOLD THEM TO DO IT.
And now that the whole Middle East is under siege, now that American politicians have something more scary than Ebola Fever or Mexican children to scream and swoon over as they drain the treasury, now that the USA is going to launch a war which will make America itself a legitimate target… Bush goes off painting pictures of his toes in the bathtub… Swell.
Way to go, Georgie.
You managed to fuck up the whole world and nobody remembers that
YOU ASKED FOR IT!
Fear is a sickness. It is a sickness that is exploited daily by the news media as they whip up one crisis after another (SUPER STORM COMING! DEBT CEILING! FISCAL CLIFF!) and by the entertainment media and, most especially, by politicians. I have to wonder how much thought these reckless people give to the damage they cause. Why is this on my mind today? Because I just heard from some people who believe that there is – right now in 2013 – a COMMUNIST PLOT to take away their guns and subjugate the whole nation. A communist plot. Today. COMMIES, they believe, are out to get them. These people believe that today. How is this possible?
Think of the way so many people were raised. The incessant drumbeat of communist domination and missiles pointing at us was drilled into their heads. From the post WWII cold-war years right up through Reagan and his EVIL EMPIRE, this fear was drilled into our heads for the purpose of manipulating and controlling us. If even 2% of the people who were thus propagandized still believe it, that would be millions of people. Your neighbors. Your relatives. A couple of years ago I was told with a straight face by a woman I know that SOVIET MISSILES are pointed at us ready to wipe us out. So, yes, they still live in fear; an ancient fear that was implanted in their heads ages ago. It is on par with the equally nefariuous and controlling early religious training that we heap on unsuspecting little kids. Look what that caused. Children raped by priests and their parents, living in fear of “hell,” reacted by beating the kids for telling such stories. The crimes went unreported for years because of fear. Crafty politicians and money-hungry advertising people exploit the atavistic fear of the early human, huddled in his cave dreading the night. This is a fear that never totally left the human race. As surely as we emerged from the ocean but now carry the ocean in our veins as blood, that spark of fear, bred for survival, remains within us. And all it takes is cynical exploitation to fan that spark into a flame. And then we have that mass hysteria of “The Other” in full bloom. Be it the Salem Witch Trials, the Nazi destruction of the Jews, Gypsies and Gay people, or the McCarthy Communist Hunt, or the Cheney/Bush/Giuliani hysteria over the non-existent “Islamo-Fascist,” that fear is always nearby and ripe for exploitation. In a state of fear people do not think clearly. We barely think at all. Instead, we do as the fear monger says. And for some, this fear sticks forever. Thus the bizarre people who to this very day insist that we are under the dire threat of COMMUNIST DOMINATION. Never mind that the communist movement collapsed a generation ago. Never mind that it is the United States that today leads the world in bombings, drone and otherwise, these people know – with the certainty of religious fervor – that communists lurk behind everything which they fear. For that is how they were trained. Such fear of something that is not there is a mental illness brought on deliberately and callously by those who sought to exploit the populous for their own ends. Just look at the fear that was whipped up during the last presidential election. Did you read about the people who KILLED themselves out of fear that Obama would be reelected? That is no accident. It was done deliberately to them. Politicians FEED on fear. Most notably, the Conservatives. This is a fear-based group of people if ever there was one. Listen to any speech from the last two Republican conventions. They were all about fear and dread and impending doom. And it almost worked. Although they lost the elections, the fear they deliberately and shamelessly implanted in their followers will haunt us for generations. Today, President Obama gets more death threats than any previous president per day! How do we break this pernicious cycle?
Almost a hundred years ago, during another era of rampant fear, a man wrote a book which pulled the mask off those who would use fear to control people. That book lay dormant for generations until it was recently reissued. I am proud to say that I wrote the introduction to this new edition. I did so because I feel that everyone should read this book. And then read it again. And give a copy to your friends. This is the only way that we stand even a remote chance of defeating the cycle of fear. For some, it is too late. As surely as people today still fear the long-gone (if it ever existed!) communist threat, years from now some people will live their lives in quaking fear of the imaginary “Islamo-Fascist” that haunts the fear-based conservatives. The damage is done. Some will never emerge from the conservative inspired post-hypnotic suggestion that the world is a dangerous, ugly place. They will never believe that the world is beautiful. They will hate long past the time when that hate is needed by the politicians. It will seem quaint to people of the future, just like the warped people in 2013 screaming about commies seem quaint to us now, but they will be dangerous nonetheless. And their whole life will have been ruined by this needless fear. This book will help some people emerge from the cocoon of fear and that is a beginning.
