NYS Gov. Cuomo Does A Complete 180 And Retains Millionaire Tax

Never raising taxes on anyone was the cornerstone of Gov. Cuomo’s campaign against the fake GOP candidate Palladino (who was run just to force people to vote for Cuomo). This pledge, Cuomo repeated not only in his rambling and dull State of the State address, but at the drop of a hat. He claimed that retaining the tax surcharge of less than 2% (two damn pennies on the dollar!) on those who rake in more than 2 million bucks a year would visit calamity upon us regular working folks. The benevolent rich folks, known in the past as “Massa” among other things, would flee the state and pay no taxes here at all. That, said trust-fund baby Cuomo, would destroy the State. Right. This ultra-wealthy gang already pays the lowest taxes in the nation – only about 14%. So let them go, already. But then a couple of months ago, something remarkable happened. Downtown The People occupied Wall Street to demand economic justice. To demand that the bankers who DESTROYED the economy pay for their crimes. To demand that the rich, who OWN the System, pay their fair share of taxes. It’s sickening how the wealthy always yap about “loving America” and our freedoms, but fight like hell against paying for those freedoms. Some love! Do they serve in the military they make a fetish out of? No. Do they put in an honest days work for a living wage? No. For the most part, this wealthy enclave sits around the swimming pool awaiting their dividend checks, which are financed by the labor of workers who pay a higher tax rate than their petty 14%. Once the OWS movement took off – after police literally gassed peaceful patriots in Union Square – it spread across the country. And that left Junior Cuomo, ever the politician, with no choice but to change his mind earlier this month and coerce the legislature to extend the measly tax surcharge on millionaires. Did he thank the OWS participants for opening his eyes? Are you kidding? What politician EVER admits to changing his or her mind? To most of these people that means political suicide. So Cuomo made some idiotic statement about how things in the economy are “different now” than when he made his pledge to his wealthy corporate bosses to cut their taxes. Hogwash! Hats off to Occupy Wall Street for getting the job done in record time. Sadly, after this extension was announced, we received several press releases from elected officials praising Cuomo and the Albany legislature but nary a word about We The People who made this happen. What are they so afraid of? Do they not exist to serve The People?

CUOMO’S HYPOCRITICAL SECRECY

It’s well worth noting that the deal to extend this tax was made in complete secrecy, negotiated behind closed doors. This from Cuomo who, as a candidate, promised the most transparent government in the history of New York State. He did likewise with the Same-Sex Marriage law and because of clear violations of the NYS Open Meetings Law in that instance, the marriage law is in danger of being tossed out by the courts. The open meeting laws are a vital part of our democracy. These legal procedures ensure that The People see the government in action. Some have trivialized the court challenge to the Same-Sex Marriage law by saying it hinges on a “mere procedural technicality.” They could not be more wrong. As all lawyers worth their salt know, in law there is no such thing as “mere procedure” for it is procedure that creates the substance in law. Said the NY Times on 11/29/11, “Acting Justice Robert B. Wiggins of State Supreme Court… wrote that it was possible that the Republican majority in the State Senate had violated the state’s open meetings law as it discussed whether to bring the marriage bill to a vote.” Because of Cuomo’s blatant disregard for legal procedure and important Sunshine Laws, the substance of the law may be overturned. Because of his secrecy, Cuomo has put a progressive measure in deep jeopardy. The man is going to be nothing but trouble. Just watch.

(As you read the article, consider this: Why do ordinary Americans ALWAYS vote for millionaires? That’s easy. And it will never change. You know why? Most Americans are of the idiotic belief that $$$$=Brains. That is as stupid as believing that CORN FLAKES=Spirituality. This cannot change. Even though the bulk of the wealthy did nothing to “earn” the money – like a Bush or a Kennedy, they fell into it – most people think just having it means they are smart. Even Obama became a millionaire before taking his Senate seat. They Corporations bought him off and it shows. But people continue to say, “If you’re so smart how come you ain’t rich?” Says something about the mess we are in, doesn’t it? And you cannot blame that on Muslims, folks. The fault lies in ourselves…)

Presidential Candidates? Few Are the 99 Percent

Occupy Wall Street protesters have touched a nerve with their slogan, “We are the 99 percent.” It has focused attention on the ground gained by the rich even as a brutal economy has pushed the typical American family backward. Economic inequality may or may not become a central issue in the presidential race, but the candidates have at least one reason to hope it does not.

A look at the finances of those vying for the presidency shows that almost all of them rank at the very top of the country’s earners. In other words, they are the 1 percent.

The possible exceptions are Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and Representative Ron Paul of Texas, whose annual household earnings may not exceed the estimated cutoff of $700,000 for the top 1 percent, and Gov. Rick Perry of Texas, who has yet to file a financial disclosure.

Buddy Roemer, the former governor of Louisiana, probably does not make the cut either, which may be one reason Mr. Roemer paid a visit to the protest encampment in Zuccotti Park in Manhattan to express his solidarity.

But Mitt Romney, whose fortune, totaling as much as a quarter of a billion dollars, dwarfs those of his rivals; Jon M. Huntsman Jr., whose father owns a global chemical company; Newt Gingrich, a successful author; Herman Cain, a businessman who reports earnings of over $1.2 million; and Rick Santorum, the former senator, who took in over $700,000 last year, are all solidly in the 1 percent, as measured by assets, income or both.

The wealth is not limited to Republicans. Though President Obama was not in the 1 percent in 2006, before his entry to presidential politics, he earned between $1.8 million and $6.8 million last year, largely from book royalties.

The gap between the candidates and the electorate is especially striking in an election season in which the economy is foremost in people’s minds and politicians are trying to demonstrate that they can feel the pain. Many people believe that those responsible for the financial crisis escaped punishment with the help of political allies.

Democrats have more or less embraced the Wall Street protesters, while Republicans have wavered between dismissing them and trying to redirect their anger from Wall Street to the White House.

The protesters are far from the only potential voters disturbed by the growing wealth divide. In a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, 69 percent of respondents said that Republican policies favored the rich. Twenty-eight percent said the same of Mr. Obama’s policies, while only 23 percent thought his policies favored the middle class. Sixty-six percent said the country’s distribution of wealth should be more even.

The wealth of the candidates exacerbates the sense that politicians are far removed from middle-class American lives. “You want to know that elected leaders understand the consequences of their political decisions,” said Kathleen Hall Jamieson, the director of theAnnenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania. “Does that candidate understand what I’m going through right now? What my family is going through? Do they know what it’s like to lose your home, to lose your job?”

Of course, presidential politics has long been a sport for the rich, and candidates need not be middle-class themselves to convince voters that they understand. Some, like Mr. Cain and Mr. Perry, may win people over with their stories of ascent from humble beginnings.

But even bootstraps are not strictly necessary. “A rich person can represent the 99 percent,” said Judy Goldstock, a retired social worker protesting in Zuccotti Park. “Look at Kennedy.”

Mr. Romney has scolded his audiences at times for “attacking people based on their success.” And Mr. Cain proclaimed, “If you don’t have a job and you’re not rich, blame yourself.” (Or, he later amended, blame Mr. Obama.)

The 99 percent meme has shifted the debate from the days when President Obama spoke of raising taxes on families that made more than $250,000. “Many people could see a future in which they might make $250,000,” Ms. Jamieson said. “Very few can see a future in which they would be a member of the 1 percent.”

The alienation is evident in a study of mothers who shop at Wal-Mart, where pollsters found that the women did not believe their elected officials could understand what it was like to be consumed by the price of milk, gasoline and college tuition.

“We asked, ‘If your elected officials knew about your life what would they do?’ And somebody said, ‘Cry,’ ” said Margie Omero, the founder of Momentum Analysis, a Democratic polling firm that along with Public Opinion Strategies, a Republican firm, has been tracking the women since May 2010. “They always want to know, ‘When is my bailout going to come?’ ”

In focus groups, the women discussed the satisfaction they derived from watching “Undercover Boss,” a reality show in which top executives take a turn at the bottom of the ladder in their own companies.

Membership in the 1 percent can be measured by wealth or by income. By household wealth, the cutoff point would be a projected $9 million in 2010, according to an analysis of the Federal Reserve Board’s Survey of Consumer Finances by Edward Wolff, an economist at New York University. The cutoff for annual household income would be about $700,000, Mr. Wolff said. (Using Internal Revenue Service figures, which count earnings differently, the Congressional Budget Office puts the earnings cutoff at $350,000 for the 1 percent in 2007.

At Zuccotti Park, protesters described the 1 percent variously as people who “can just make money with money,” “the ones so interested in making profits that they’re willing to lay off hundreds of thousands of people a year,” and “anyone who doesn’t create a product.”

Even by the numbers, though, it is hard to tell precisely where the candidates stand. The majority have not released tax returns, and their financial disclosure forms give only a range of assets and income. Mrs. Bachmann’s income was listed at $280,000 to $840,000, and Mr. Paul’s was $360,000 to $1.1 million, which included their Congressional salaries of $174,000.

The disclosures exclude the candidates’ homes and other noninvestment property, as well as the salaries of their spouses. Most disclose income over a period longer than a year, from which The New York Times calculated annual earnings. The candidates were likelier to rank in the elite in income rather than in assets. Mr. Cain’s net worth topped out at $6.6 million, for example, and Mr. Santorum’s at $2.6 million.

Mr. Perry appears to be among the least affluent of the leading candidates. He earns $150,000 a year as governor, and his wife makes $60,000 a year at a nonprofit organization. But the couple have made money in real estate deals, including one that pushed their income above $1 million in 2007. Various news organizations have estimated the Perrys’ net worth at just over $1 million.

Advice For This Time Of Year

This is the time of year when people hear a lot about witchcraft and magickal workings. Many people take time at the end of the year to look into using magick to get the things they sought during the previous months. That is a good thing, a traditional thing… a HUMAN thing. Magick has deep roots in human culture. Even now in the 21^st Century it is very much with us.

But in our simplistic, instant-gratification culture of today, there’s a dangerous misconception that anyone can work magick without proper training just by following a store bought recipe. This is particularly true of so-called “root work” or Hoodoo methods. DIY is not the way to go. It is dangerous! It takes a trained pro to do the work or to guide you through it for yourself.

Unfortunately, many dilettantes read some books for a couple of months and then set up shop as “experts.” Hint: if hoodoo work does not include the Bible in it, it is fake. Before anyone even thinks about becoming expert in magick work – high magick or folk magick – you MUST read & study the torah! That is a must. Beware of any person who claims to work any magick but who is not proficient in the Bible. The Bible is the root of all magickal arts, especially Kabalistic arts. And as for Hoodoo, Moses is regarded as one of the first Root Doctors. So you see, this is very important. Anyone claiming expertise in Hoodoo without knowing the torah, the prophets, especially the Psalms is a fake who will lead you into trouble. Test anyone who claims to have such expertise. Ask them what part the Bible plays in their workings. If they shy away from the Bible, if they get all evasive and “new-age” on you, get away from them. It takes DECADES, not years to hone this craft. Hoodoo is more than stuffing things into cute little bags. Ritual Magick is more than memorizing the Goetia. Wicca is more than wearing a cape. Tarot reading is more than studying the definitions of cards in a book. It all takes DECADES of work and dedication. WORK. Beware ANYONE who has not been doing the work for decades. Someone who says, “I’ve been into this for almost three years now” is someone to avoid.

Stick with workers who know the Bible and who have DECADES of experience. Or you run great risk. The powers of nature are not to be trifled with by someone who thinks it’s kind of cool.

47 PEOPLE SHOT!

This past weekend, 47 people were shot on the streets of New York City. Think of that. 47 people over one weekend. We live in a culture that thinks nothing of using violence. We spend more money on our military than all other nations combined. As of now, the USA is involved in wars all over the world. Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Somalia, to name just five. The NY Times reports that the Obama administration is using long-distance drone bombers – ghoulishly named “Predators” – against a dozen nations. And then we tell folks, “Violence does not solve anything.” Bulllshit. There is a clear disconnect between what the government does and what it tells The People. The USA uses violence at the drop of a hat. People like Cheney and Bush, Junior started wars based on total lies and they walk free; Bush, a trust-fund baby from New England, finally shedding his fake shit-kicker image to dine on soufflés at the finest restaurants… Violence works out just fine for them. As Malcolm “X” said, “Violence is as American as cherry pie.” Look at the nightly network TV lineup. Murders are our prime form of entertainment… What is it that people find so entertaining about murder?
47 people were shot on the streets of New York this past weekend, Next Sunday, the nation that invented “Carpet Bombing,” will go on an orgy of self-pity over the destroying of the World Trade Center 10 years ago. How many people – both at home and abroad – have we as a nation murdered since then? All the while babbling about being a “Christian Nation,” we should note. And without a trace of irony. A truly Christian nation would have looked at the bombings and said, “We will not fight back. We forgive you.” Instead, the USA kills millions of people across the globe. Violence is the reward of violence. As a preacher once said, “whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” Look around the world. This nation sows violence. What can you expect in return?
